Bad habits, sedentary lifestyles, environmental pollution, consumption of unhealthy foodstuffs, failure to follow proper hygiene and usage of heavy cosmetics have become responsible for frequent acne breakouts and appearances of blackheads (clogging of facial pores due to excess oil production) on the face. If you are a regular sufferer, instead of using all kinds of chemical-laden stuff to destroy them, you should go in for a natural DIY Blackhead Mask.

1. Turmeric, Yoghurt and Sandalwood

The organic variety of turmeric destroys bacteria and lightens the complexion. Combined with a natural cleanser and absorber like sandalwood, it makes for a marvelous DIY blackhead mask. Yoghurt removes the dead skin cells.

Ingredients

  • Yoghurt (plain) – two tablespoons
  • Turmeric powder (organic) – one-half teaspoon
  • Sandalwood powder – one teaspoon

Method

  • At the outset, mix all the ingredients together in a bowl.
  • Next, apply the paste all over your face.
  • Rinse it off with cold water after half-an-hour or so.
  • Pat your skin dry, albeit gently.

You may use this mask three to four times in a week.

2. Baking Soda and Honey

The combination exfoliates and absorbs oil, thereby making it great for combination skins. It may be used twice or thrice per week.

Ingredients

  • Baking soda – two tablespoons
  • Honey (raw) – one tablespoon

Method

  • Blend the ingredients well, in order to form a smooth paste.
  • Use a cosmetic brush to spread it evenly over the face, especially the cheeks, nose and chin.
  • When you begin to feel a gently stinging sensation after 10 or 15 minutes, it is time to wash your face.
  • Pat your skin dry with a towel.

Honey is an extremely useful humectant. When added to another substance (in this case, baking soda), the humectant helps to keep the batter moist.

These are some alternative combinations, which you may use too.

  • Lemon juice and sugar
  • Baking soda and water
  • Sour cream and salt

Method

  • Make a thin paste and apply over a cleansed face.
  • Once the paste dries, wash it off with cool water.
  • Exfoliate your face, albeit using the equipment gently.
  • Go in for light and circular movements, such that your skin remains undamaged.
  • After three to five minutes of exfoliation, rinse your face once again.

3. Honey and Cinnamon

Cinnamon will remove harmful microbes from your skin, while honey will moisten and nourish it. You may prepare and use this mask once in three days.

Ingredients

  • Cinnamon powder (organic) – two teaspoons
  • Honey (raw) – two teaspoons

Method

  • Blend the cinnamon powder and honey well, in a mixing bowl.
  • Spread this thick paste over your face.
  • Since this mask is bound to sting, let it remain just for a couple of minutes or more.
  • Rinse your face with regular water.

If you do not like the cinnamon, you may use plain honey for unclogging your facial pores. Ensure that your face and fingers are dry and clean. With the help of your ring and middle fingers, dab the honey onto the blackheads. Focus on the forehead, chin and nose. Avoid the regions under your eyes. After patting up to three minutes, wash your face with warm water.

4. Clay and Water

Chockfull of natural minerals, natural clay will help your skin become cleaner, improve the complexion and tighten the pores. You may do this once or twice a week.

Ingredients

  • Clay (natural) – two teaspoons
  • Water (as required)

Method

  • Make a fine paste of the clay, with the help of water.
  • Spread the mixture evenly over your face.
  • When it dries completely, wash your face with cold water.
  • Gently wipe it dry.
  • Use an oil-free or light moisturiser, for rehydration.

It is possible to use cosmetic clay too.

Ingredients

  • Cosmetic clay (from a herb shop) – one tablespoon
  • Apple cider vinegar or pure water – one tablespoon
  • Rosewater or a couple of drops of any essential oil – optional

Method

  • Combine the clay and apple cider vinegar or pure water in a bowl.
  • Ensure that the paste is smooth and free of lumps.
  • Apply it all over the face, or only on the clusters of blackheads.
  • Let it remain for 15 to 20 minutes, until the mask dries completely.
  • Press a wet and warm washcloth to the mask.
  • Finally, wipe off the paste from your face, albeit with gentle movements.

There is a third way of using clay.

Ingredients

  • Moroccan red clay – two tablespoons
  • Avocado (mashed) – one teaspoon
  • Rose water – three tablespoons

Method

  • Make a smooth paste out of the ingredients.
  • Use plastic, wooden or glass spoons and bowls for mixing the clay.
  • Metal bowls and spoons will destroy the potency of the clay.
  • Apply the paste all over the face, with a cosmetic brush or freshly washed fingers.
  • Focus more on the areas having more blackheads.
  • Use warm water to wash your face, once the mask dries.

5. Milk, Honey and Gelatine

You might suggest this to anyone who asks you, “How to remove blackheads”. The collagen cells within your skin will receive a splendid boost. Furthermore, the face will remain naturally moisturised. You may use this mask twice a week.

Ingredients

  • Gelatine crystals – one teaspoon
  • Milk – one tablespoon

  • Pour the gelatine crystals, milk and honey into the glass bowl of a double boiler.

  • Use low heat.

  • When it cools slightly, apply the mixture all over your face with the help of a cosmetic brush.
  • Peel the mask off your skin, after 10 or 15 minutes.
  • Wash your face.
  • Dry it gently with the aid of a soft linen towel.
  • Your skin requires rehydration. Therefore, use an oil-free and light moisturiser on the face.

Gelatine is not popular simply because it is an extremely nourishing food, which can blend with other ingredients beautifully. It is healthy for the human skin too, for it helps to grant it a healthy tone, firmness and smoothness.

6. Egg White

Ingredients

  • One egg
  • A paper towel

Method

  • Crack open the egg.

While mineral-rich oatmeal suffices to exfoliate your skin and brighten your complexion, lemon juice acts as a bleaching agent. Olive oil contains vitamin E to nourish your skin and restore its elasticity. Yoghurt removes excess oil. Combine them, and you obtain a powerful DIY blackhead mask!

Ingredients

  • Oatmeal – two tablespoons
  • Lemon (juice) – one tablespoon
  • Olive oil – one tablespoon
  • Yoghurt (plain) – three tablespoons

Method

  • Blend all the ingredients in a bowl.
  • Ensure that there are no lumps.
  • Dampen your face slightly.
  • Apply the paste all over the face and neck.
  • Rinse your face with cold water after 15 minutes or as soon as you feel the mask drying and tightening.
  • Dry your face gently.
  • Use a natural and light moisturiser, for rehydration.

8. Oatmeal, Honey, Yoghurt and Cucumber

You are already aware of the wonderful uses of yoghurt, oatmeal and honey. Well, you may bring in cucumber too, for the vitamin C and ascorbic acid present within it, helps to soothe inflamed/irritated skin. You may use this mask twice or thrice in a week.

Ingredients

  • Oatmeal – half-a-cup
  • Honey (raw) – two tablespoons
  • Yoghurt (plain) – one-fourth cup
  • Cucumber (pulp) – half-a-cup

Method

  • Take a glass bowl and pour the ingredients into it.
  • When everything has blended well, place the mixture in the refrigerator.
  • Take it out only when the mixture reveals a slightly solidified and thick consistency.
  • Apply this cold mask onto your face.
  • Rinse your face with warm water, after 10 or 15 minutes.

Several of the recipes, including this one, include yoghurt as a major ingredient. This is because it works magic on your skin! It removes those hateful signs of aging, or rather, delays the appearance of aging. The lactic acid within it refuses to let wrinkles or fine lines show up on your face, regardless of your chronological age.

9. Activated Charcoal

This is a splendid black mask for blackheads! Activated charcoal, if used a couple of times a week, should suffice to remove impurities, excess oil and bacteria from your face, leaving it super-duper clean and clear!

Ingredients

  • Activated charcoal – one teaspoon
  • Distilled water – one tablespoon
  • Gelatine (unflavoured) one teaspoon

Method

  • Mix the charcoal powder, gelatine crystals and distilled water in the glass bowl of a double boiler.
  • Heat the boiler on a low flame.
  • Stir the ingredients with the aid of a wooden spatula.
  • You must obtain a thick and black liquid.
  • Turn off the heat and remove the glass bowl from the boiler.
  • Allow the mixture to cool.
  • Concentrating more on the chin and nose regions, apply the paste all over the face.
  • Peel off the mask after 10 or 15 minutes.
  • Rinse your face and pat it dry.
  • Use an oil-free and light moisturiser.

Do not confuse activated charcoal with normal charcoal, for it has nothing to do with coal! It originates from coconut husks majorly. However, wood, many natural fibres, nutshells, etc, may yield activated charcoal too. When you burn any of these materials with the aid of specific chemicals or hot gases, it converts into porous activated charcoal, which is capable of absorbing toxins from your skin.

Ingredients

  • Activated charcoal – half-a-teaspoon
  • Apple cider vinegar – one teaspoon
  • Clay – one tablespoon
  • Water – as required

Method

  • Take a bowl.
  • Mix all the ingredients together, in order to form a smooth paste.
  • You may use a wooden spatula for thorough blending.
  • Using a cosmetic brush, cover all the oily patches on your face with the mixture.
  • Allow it to remain for seven to ten minutes.
  • Rinse your face gently, with cool water.
  • Pat your face dry.
  • Apply a light and oil-free moisturiser.

There is a third way of using activated charcoal too.

Ingredients

  • Activated charcoal – two teaspoons
  • White/brown rice flour (finely ground) – two tablespoons
  • Baking soda – one tablespoon
  • Castile soap (unscented and liquid) – two tablespoons
  • Vitamin E, almond, apricot kernel or jojoba oil – one tablespoon

Method

  • Take a small bowl, and put all the ingredients into it.
  • You may witness a slight bubbling.
  • Stir with a wooden spatula, until the consistency becomes creamy and smooth.
  • Pour this mixture into an airtight container.
  • Store it in a dry and cool place.
  • Whenever you wish to use it, dampen your face first.
  • Apply a couple of teaspoons of this scrub onto your face, with the aid of your fingertips.
  • Use small, circular movements.
  • Avoid the areas under, and around the eyes.
  • Let the mask stay on for a few minutes.
  • Rinse your face with lukewarm water.
  • Pat it dry.

In case, the mixture appears dry when you open the container, you may add some almond oil or water and stir it. It will regain its creamy consistency.
