For years, questions have been raised regarding the risks associated with hair grease. In reality, when utilized correctly, this hair product is not detrimental and will not inhibit growth. Previously, a lack of understanding on the correct use of products to care for black hair unfortunately led to misuse. For instance, I recall often coating my tresses in grease, however felt my hair still lacked moisturization. This was due to inadequate utilization of the hair product. Without moisture, only using grease did end in damaging my hair.

Nonetheless, the harm caused was a direct result of inadequate understanding on the correct use of the product.

This video will give you good understanding about hair grease and ways to use it.

Hair Grease and Hair Moisture

Hair grease cannot moisturize your hair, however it does help retain moisture when used correctly. Using water or a water-based leave-in conditioner prior to the application of grease will ensure maximum moisture is sealed into the hair. After these steps are completed, the grease can be applied as a sealant to help add shine and further lock in moisture.

What Grease Ingredients Often Cause a Debate?

Although it’s been preached against, it’s difficult to overlook the benefits of using grease on your hair. While store-bought grease may contain mineral oil or petroleum, these do not necessarily clog pores and are effective at keeping moisture locked in. However, it’s important to not use too much as this may increase product buildup.

To avoid this, use grease in moderation and best practice is to shampoo your hair regularly. Ultimately, when used correctly, it can be an effective and healthy choice for your hair.

It is rue that mineral oil is not on my personal favorite list. However, in the past I have used some products that contained it and absolutely loved the results. Although it can be a bit heavier than other ingredients, the key to avoiding product buildup and overly greasy hair is to use it in moderation and cleanse your hair with a clarifying shampoo. That way, you’ll be able to get the desired results without having to worry about any negative side effects.

If you prefer to go the natural route, you can always opt for a natural pomade, which is actually very similar to hair grease, but with more beneficial ingredients. So, if you’re looking for a good product to keep your hair looking and feeling its best, you can’t go wrong with either mineral oil or a natural pomade.
