Normal sweating is a good thing and helps in removal of toxins from the body. But sometimes you could sweat excessively for various reasons and this state is called Hyperhidrosis.  This could cause the embarrassing situation for you and hence you will need to tackle it. Hence we bring here the causes and home remedies for excessive sweating that you must know.

There are several causes for excessive sweating. Some of them are listed below.

  • Ladies who are undergoing hormonal imbalances during puberty, just before periods or during menopause could experience excessive sweating.
  • People who are obese and are overweight are also prone to excessive sweating.
  • Excessive sweating could be a sign of hereditary too. If your parents or grandparents had it, it is likely you will have it too.
  • People suffering from infection could have excessive sweating in some parts of their body.
  • Being anxious is one of the common causes for excessive sweating. It is typically experienced when people are scared of facing things. It could be stage fright, listening to unpleasant news or just plain fear of the unknown.
  • Being stressed continuously could be another reason for excessive sweating.
  • Getting very angry can also get you to sweat excessively.
  • Medical conditions like respiratory problems, hypertension or diabetes can also be causes for excessive sweating.
  • Consumption of some of the over the counter medications could also cause excessive sweating in some of the people.

Home Remedies For Excessive Sweating

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has astringent property which helps in controlling the generation of sweat. Dab a ball of cotton in apple cider vinegar and apply it on the affected areas. It could be under the arms, feet or palm. It helps to balance the pH value and hence inhibits growth of bacteria. It closes up the pores. The best method would be to apply it before going to bed. Once you wake up in the morning you can rinse off the applied area.

You could also dilute apple cider vinegar in say 1/4th bucket of water. You can then keep your feet in this water for 15 to 20 minutes. This is a good solution to take care of sweaty feet. It needs to be done regularly.

Apple cider vinegar can also be consumed for its effects on lessening of sweating. For this you can mix 2 teaspoons of natural vinegar and 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. Consume this concoction thrice a day. This should be taken early in the morning on empty stomach or half an hour before meals.

2. Lemon

Lemon is one of the most effective home remedies for excessive sweating. Since it contains citric acid it aids in removal of bacteria and its fragrance is pleasant too.  To use it, mix 1 teaspoon of lemon juice with 1 teaspoon of baking soda in a bowl. Dip a cotton ball into this mixture and apply over body parts which are prone to sweating. You could apply it overnight and wash it off in the morning. Else you can leave it for 30 minutes and rinse it off. It is advisable to not go out in the sun with this treatment. For lemon juice is photo sensitive. It causes bleaching of the areas. Lemon could also be used with salt as an anti excessive sweating agent.

3. Potato

Raw potato is a good anti perspiring agent. Since it absorbs moisture it is a good blocking agent too. To use this, cut the potato into slices. Rub the slice on the affected area for a few minutes. Let it dry. You could also extract juice from the raw potato. Refrigerate it and use it whenever you require it. Dip a cotton ball into the juice and apply on body areas which are prone to sweating. Leave it to dry for some time, say around 30 minutes. Rinse the applied areas. Wear loose clothing after this.

4. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is one of the very home remedies for excessive sweating and skin issues too.  Massage the affected areas with coconut oil till it is absorbed by the skin. Leave it to dry for some time. Coconuts are easily available in tropical countries. In the oil form it is available in most parts of the world.

5. Tomato Juice

Consumption of tomato juice helps in getting rid of sweat in various body parts and the bad odor associated with it. You can make tomato juice by crushing tomatoes in a juicer and extracting the juice from the pulp. You can dilute it with water and add ice cubes to it to make it cold. This can serve as tomato shake. This should be taken every day to see results.

6. Drinking Plain Water

Hydrating yourself with the right quantity of water every day will also help in getting rid of sweat fast and remove the bad odor with it. When enough and more water has consumed the toxins from the body get released through kidneys in the form of urine. Hence there is less of sweating. Keeping your body hydrated also helps in maintaining the metabolism in the body and you can experience less stress. This, in turn, reduces the sweating.

7. Black Tea

Black tea consists of tannic acid which is an anti-per spirant and blocks the sweat glands. The tannic acid neutralizes the affected area and hence constricts the sweating. If you want to use it for sweaty palms and feet you can do the following. Soak 1 or 2 tea bags in slightly warm water for a few minutes. Soak your feet or palms in the water for 15 minutes. After which you can rinse off the affected areas or have a bath.

To tackle sweating of armpits keep the wet tea bags under the arms and leave it for 15 minutes. Rinse the affected areas or have a bath after that.

8. Wheat Grass Juice

Wheat grass contains a number of nutrients that the body needs on a daily basis. It contains vitamins like vitamin B6,B12 and vitamin C. It is also loaded with proteins. Thus by consuming wheat grass juice early morning on empty stomach it helps to neutralize the body status and lessen external sweating.

9. Sandalwood Paste

White sandalwood powder is found effective in absorbing sweat and drying up of the affected area as fast as possible. Since it has a nice fragrance it gives a nice odor too. Thus the excessive sweaty areas are kept dry and soft.

To make the paste, take 1 teaspoon of sandalwood powder, rose water and a little lemon juice and mix it all up to make a paste. Apply this concoction to the body parts which are extra sweaty. Leave it to dry. Finally rinse it off with some warm water. You can do this treatment daily to see results.

10. Tea tree Oil

Tea tree oil is anti-fungal and an anti-per spirant and one of the great home remedies for excessive sweating. By using it on the affected area it inhibits growth of bacteria and gets rid of side effects of excessive sweating. To use this take tea tree oil in a bowl. Dip a cotton ball into it and apply on affected areas. Leave it to dry for about 30 minutes. Finally rinse it off with warm water. If you find that the tea tree oil is irritating to your skin you can dilute it with half a cup of water and then use it.

11. Chamomile  Herb

This herb has anti-bacterial and astringent properties which makes it one of the best home remedies for excessive sweating. You can consume it as a tea or apply it on affected areas.

To use it as a drink dissolve 1 teaspoon of this herb into boiling water and allow it to stay for 10 minutes. Filter the liquid and have it as a drink 2 to 3 times a day.

As an external application agent, dip a cotton ball into the tea and apply on affected areas. Let the areas dry thoroughly. After which you can rinse it off with some warm water.

12. Baking Soda

The areas which have excessive sweating are normally acidic in nature. This sort of environment is conducive for bacteria to thrive and cause itching. To get rid of the bacteria and bring about a pH balanced baking soda is a good solution.

Make a paste of baking soda, corn starch and 2 to 3 drops of essential oil. Mix it up into a paste. Apply it on the areas where you sweat more than necessary. Leave it for around 30 minutes till it dries up. Finally rinse the areas with warm water. Do it regularly to see results.

General Guidelines To Prevent Excessive Sweating

Maintain your body in a hygienic state. Ensure that your armpits and private parts are washed and dried properly.

  • Do yoga and meditation to relieve stress on a regular basis.
  • Avoid using harsh soaps and deodorants on your body.
  • Avoid highly sweetened, spicy and chemically processed foods.
  • Wear loose natural fabrics that help in absorption of sweat.
  • Avoid taking very hot baths and consumption of hot drinks too.
  • Try to keep your body temperature normal.
